Adventures in produce: Dragon fruit

For my adventures in produce, I decided to try a fruit that many people have heard of, but never really eaten, a dragon fruit! I had seen them all over the place as far as I can remember, in drinks, in videos, pictures. But I had never actually eaten one before, despite their supposed popularity. I was lucky to find some down at my local HEB and snag one, to my surprise they actually had two kinds there, the normal red rose shaped dragon fruit with the bleeding purple color its so famous for, and a small yellow variety I later found out was called the yellow sunburst dragon fruit.

The yellow sunburst was not very big, maybe about the size of a miniature football and had a strange rubber like texture, like that of a stress ball, not the foam kind to be clear. It was very easy to cut through and I didn't make any plans beside eating it raw as I was short on time. The inside was s stark white with black seeds, in a way it was almost like a reverse kiwi, very loud and colorful on the outside and plain on the inside, where as the kiwi is plain on the outside and colorful on the inside. The texture was very slick and slippery, almost like a slushie but solid, it also had a bit of a crunchy texture from all the seeds inside of it, but I enjoyed it and ate it by the spoonful! I definitely want to experiment with the dragon fruit and try the other types in proper recipes and stuff in the future.

  1. I had the same experience with my red dragon fruit! The way you described it was super relatable and I enjoyed the read. I also want to try more things in the future with dragon fruit.
