After many times of ignoring the temptation, I finally gave in and decided to try dragon fruit for the first time. The exotic pink fruit with green spikes which looks very appealing. I will say I am not sure if I would have ventured off on my own if it was not a requirement for this assignment. I am usually not one to try new things.
At first glance, dragon fruit looks very aesthetic and picture worthy. It didn't have a distinct smell, more like the smell of rose petals. I honestly chose this fruit out of curiosity. I have always wondered what it would taste like.
Dragon fruit also known as pitaya, and comes from a type of cactus native to Central America. You typically see these being frequently purchased in the tropical regions. They’re low in calories and high in fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin C.
I had a simple plan of action, cut it open and enjoy. Once i cut it open i noticed the jello like texture with what looked like chia seeds. I haven’t heard any other ways of eating them other than cutting them up and enjoying them in an açaí type of fruit bowl. I wanted to focus on the flavor alone and not mask it with any other items. I would say I want to try it in an açaí bowl next but I didn’t make it past the first bite.
I took one bite…. And that was it. One. Bite. The texture threw me off immediately. I would compare it to if you left jelly out on the counter for a few days, cut if up and then added in chia seeds to enjoy! It wasn’t sweet. It was flavorless, somehow, which I did not expect. It tasted like disappointment and one hundred percent regret.
That was the end of the line for me and I will not try again unfortunately. Dragon fruit is officially off the list. With the left overs I have I am thinking of potentially putting the fruit into an açaí bowl to try and enjoy. I will not be trying it on its own again.
Overall I really understood the ‘don't judge a book by its cover’ saying. It was very pretty but did not taste good at all. Safe to say dragon fruit and i are not compatible, and that’s okay. Not every fruit is meant to be in your life (or your blender). But at least i can say I tried it.
Would i recommend it? Maybe in an açaí bowl but on its own I wouldn’t. If you like mild textures, enjoy tasteless flavors, and want something for cute pictures, then yes otherwise save yourself the $6.
Im glad someone else chose to get a dragon fruit, I was really torn on which one to try, so being able to see your own peek into the world of fruit dragons was really helpful!
